On April 21, 1st Ed Credit Union hosted a reality fair for the 16 seniors at Shalom Christian Academy of Chambersburg. Each student submitted their preferred career choice and was given a budgeting worksheet with their salary and monthly take-home pay (after taxes, insurance and retirement contributions). The worksheet has a list of necessary budgeting items such as housing, transportation, entertainment and food where each student had to make a financial decision. The students were divided into two groups of 8 where they worked with a 1st Ed representative to review their budget and go back and downgrade if necessary. Of course, their favorite part of the fair was spinning the Wheel of Reality to see if their classmates got lucky with extra cash or had to take out of their savings for a budget-breaking spin like losing their cell phone. This exercise will help the students have a better understanding of finances and what will come after high school or college graduation.
